WatKat is a free delay and echo VST, Audio Unit plugin developed by GSi. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

WatKat is a digital “clone” of a Wem Watkins “Custom” Copicat. It sounds very lo-fi, noisy, irregular. When you turn it off and leave the tape loaded, the tape bends in proximity of the capstan, and this turns into a periodic pitch fall during echo playback; plus, it gets hot and the background hum gets worse over time… you should turn it off every now and then; the tape is never completely erased, and the capstan motor flutters… and it gets worse if you touch it while it’s spinning; heads tend to get dirty very soon, in fact you should clean them often. This is true for the actual hardware unit, and for the digital simulation as well.

The idea with the WallsOfSound plug-in is to emulate, in a way most general as possible, the reverberant effects of sound traveling from sources to receivers in a three-dimensional space – bounded, fully or partially, by walls of specified sonic reflectivity coefficients. Rather than control reverb and echo with the conventional knob or slider-driven, single-dimensional delay parameters and the like, reverberant effects would be created by actually creating a virtual room and laying out sources and receivers in the three dimensions – a more intuitive approach.

W1 Limiter

W1 Limiter is a free limiter VST, VST3, Audio Unit, RTAS plugin developed by 4Front Technologies. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

W1 Limiter is a “brickwall limiter” that is a clone of Waves L1-Ultramaximizer, with “identical output” and an approximation of Waves L2.

Waves’ L1 (and thus W1 – for compatibility reasons) uses three times longer actual release time than the standard RT60 metric. This means that if you set 50ms release in the limiter, it will actually yield with 150ms standard RT60 release time, but users of L1 should be familiar with it.

Starting from version 2.0 W1 Limiter also contains adaptive release logic. The author tried to emulate Waves L2, however could only do this approximately. Also, unlike Waves, W1 allows changing release time while in adaptive mode.

Waves IDR dithering is not emulated.
