Loudness

Loudness free eq | compressor by WOK

Loudness is a free eq and compressor VST plugin developed by WOK. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

WOK Loudness simulates the loudness button on old HiFi amps, which alters the frequency response curve to correspond roughly with the equal loudness characteristic of the ear at lower volumes.

The level of high and low frequencies is increased at low listening levels, to compensate for the fact that as the volume of audio decreases, the ears lower sensitivity to extreme high and low frequencies may cause these signals to fall below threshold. As a result audio material may seem to become ‘thin’ sounding at low volumes, losing bass and treble, the ‘Loudness compensation’ button (often just labelled ‘Loudness’ or ‘Loud’) is intended to rectify this situation.

Loudness is available for free as a 32-bit VST plugin for Windows (sometimes a nag-screen pops up).

jHammerEZ

jHammerEZ free compressor | eq by jhudstudio

jHammerEZ is a free compressor and eq VST, VST3, Audio Unit plugin developed by jhudstudio. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

Summary:

  • jHammerEZ supports Windows/64-bit/VST2/VST3 (VST3 will be uploaded later) Mac/64-bit/AU 32-bit will not be supported unless enough requests.
  • Use the noise gate to cut unwanted signal in between silent parts. Simply Thin/fat the sound, compress, de-ess, and clip it. Just that easy.
  • Hover over each knob or button to find out what it does.
  • Preset loader/save. I will be making presets at some point to add to the plugin.
  • Advanced controls. Added for those who want more control over settings. Example, attack and release settings for the compressor.
  • Change background color for both Main controls and Advanced controls. Currently there is only 2 color modes.

IQ4gui

IQ4gui free eq | compressor by platinumears

IQ4gui is a free eq and compressor VST plugin developed by platinumears. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Imagine a standard compressor with a filter inserted in the side-chain, so that it only responds to certain frequencies. Now imagine that instead of controlling the overall gain of the signal, it only controls the volume of specific frequencies… you just discovered dynamic EQ – IQ4gui.

In other words, it can compress or expand specific frequencies in a similar manner to multi-band compression (but with a very different character) or it can de-ess, or perform more esoteric functions such as ducking one frequency when another is prominent.

You may find it easier to imagine the process as an automatic EQ, which can be used to cut a certain frequency only when it becomes a problem, or apply a boost only when that region isn’t already loud enough.

While the audio signal passes through all four EQ bands in series, the side-chain filters are configured in parallel and are all fed from the main input, so changes to band one (for example) will not affect the amount of gain reduction or expansion applied by any other bands.

Features:

  • 4 identical EQ bands, switchable between shelving or peaking types.
  • 4 dynamics processing modes (up or down, compression or expansion).
  • RMS detection for musical dynamic shaping.
  • Separately tunable sidechain filters with side-chain listen option.
  • MS processing.

DuckEQ

DuckEQ free eq by HeelAudio

DuckEQ is a free equalizer Audio Unit plugin developed by HeelAudio. Compatible OS(s): macOS.

DuckEQ is an Equaliser that reacts to a side chain input, or in other words a Ducker that can act on specific frequencies. However, it can also work as a normal Ducker or as a dynamic EQ.

What is it good for?

Ducking has many applications in mixing and broadcast, especially for managing tracks with overlapping frequency content, like Bass and Kick Drum, Vocals and Electric Guitars etc. DuckEQ’s integration of EQ means it can duck only specific frequency bands, as well as normal ‘broadband’ ducking. Apart from ducking, there are many other applications that DuckEQ can be used, for example instead of ducking a signal, one could apply gain to the EQ bands and “EQ-Gate”.

What’s the difference to using a compressor?

In many cases a Compressor with a SC input can do the job, however specialised duckers have more control over the gain reduction. For example, when ducking a guitar from vocal, a compressor will reduce the guitars more on loud words and less on quiet ones, which is the opposite of what is desired. A ducker reduces the gain the same amount every time.

4U+ DynamicTiltEQ

ZynAddSubFX free software-synthesizer by paulnasca 3

4U+ DynamicTiltEQ is a free equalizer VST, VST3, Audio Unit, RTAS, AAX plugin developed by HOFA-Plugins. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

HOFA 4U+ DynamicTiltEQ is the only available freeware Tilt EQ. It can do everything the legendary analogue models could:
Use just one knob for the perfect balancing of low and high frequencies on the highest audio level.

This alone is a fantastic feature, but (of course) was not enough to suit our idea. We brainstormed about the setup of the best Tilt EQ of all times and came up with a list that leaves no wish unfulfilled. The freeware includes:

  • gain/cut up to 24 dB.
  • variable tilt width for transparent adjustments as well as musical sound shaping.
  • splittable bass and treble tilt.
  • low and highcut filter (6 & 12 dB/octave).
  • individual routing for stereo, mid, side left and right processing.
  • up to 32x oversampling.
  • support for Mac and PC, 32- and 64-bit DAWs.

It’s extremely rewarding to activate the dynamics for the low and high range and the integrated analyzer for very little money. In combination with parallel processing and a dry/wet control this makes for fascinating creative possibilities.

Despite all these extras, 4U+ DynamicTiltEQ is a simple, self-explaining sound shaper – so just install it, start to work and enjoy the good sound.

HOFA 4U+ DynamicTiltEQ – The worldwide first dynamic Tilt EQ.

HOFA 4U+ DynamicTiltEQ provides for:

  • sound shaping on the highest level.
  • balanced sounds.
  • less waste of time by its intuitive workflow.
  • analogue feel of handling and sound.
  • new creative means of expression.
