Rotating Space

ZynAddSubFX free software-synthesizer by paulnasca 2

Rotating Space is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Florian Königstein. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Rotating Space” is a freeware VST effect plug-in for Windows: A 3D panner based on Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs).

Rotating Space simulates a sound source (the stereo input signal) which rotates around up to ten arbitrarily definable axes. You must use headphones to hear the effect. Consider the following arrangement: The stereo input signal is played with two speakers. Over the time the virtual speakers will move around the listener while the distance to the listener keeps constant. You can determine the way in which the speakers move.

Version 1.1.0 offers some improvements over version 1.0.0:

  • There are 10 processing units (PUs). Each of them can be configured to rotate or mirror one or both of the virtual speakers. Further more they can be used to rotate or mirror the rotation axis of the next PU.
  • Each PU act like an oscillator which periodically changes the angle of rotation or the amount of mirroring. The phase of this oscillator can now be selected, and it’s easier to set the frequency of an oscillator to be exactly an integer multiply of another oscillator.
  • A “global frequency” slider can be used to scale the frequencies of all the oscillators simultaneously.
  • There are new interesting presets.

RealSpread

RealSpread is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Truality Audio. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

RealSpread is an Audio Plugin (VST Windows) which “Stereoizes” a mono audio signal or widens a stereo one, without practically compromising mono compatibility. The spartan GUI conforms to my philosophy of simplicity in plugin design. RealSpread is more effective on single sources, for example a single (mono) Drums Overhead or Room microphone. Of course, you can experiment with stereo sources as well although I wouldn’t recommend using it on Groups/ Stems or Masters…except if you are aiming for that something else.

You can insert a Goniometer / Lissajous pattern plugin on the Master bus if you want to observe the effect…

Download the dll file here and put it in your VST Folder.

Quick Haas

Quick Haas free stereo-imaging by Venn Audio

Quick Haas is a free stereo imaging VST, Audio Unit plugin developed by Venn Audio. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

Quick Haas is a free and simple psychoacoustic panning plugin, available as a Windows VST or mac Audio Unit. The ‘Haas Effect’, also known as the precedence effect, is a psychoacoustic effect where listeners can perceive the special position of an audio signal depending on very small delays between the left and right channels of the audio signal. This allows for a much more realistic panning effect than traditional panning, provided the playback device is in stereo.

This plugin couldn’t be simpler to use! If the input is stereo, just select how you want it to be routed into the pan (it is recommended only one channel, or mono, is used if the original source’s left/right channels differ), and then adjust the central knob left right so as to make the sound appear to be coming from that direction. Hint: this plugin allows for very fine adjustments of up to a tenth of a millisecond, and often only small adjustments less than 2ms is all that’s needed to create a powerful precedence effect.

Quadropolis

Quadropolis free stereo-imaging by Christian Budde

Quadropolis is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Christian Budde. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

The Quadropolis Surround-Plugin is a VST effect Plugin dedicated to Quadraphonic Music. There was a lot of research on Quadraphonics back in the early 70s.

This Plugin simulates an anechoic chamber with 4 loudspeakers in it (starting from 45° in 90° steps). Within the soundfield there is – of course – the listeners head, which is simulated with a 512 Tap HRTF-Convolver (FIR-Filter). This causes high CPU-Load (about 50% @2GHz, but improvements are on the way).

The plugin gives you the ability to mix your quadraphonic music, without using 4 loudspeakers. Only Headphones are needed. Just put the plugin (with 4 Inputs and 2 Outputs) at the end of the mixing chain and enjoy panning the music around.

Proximity

Proximity free panner by vladg/sound

Proximity is a free panner VST, Audio Unit plugin developed by vladg/sound. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

Proximity is a collaborative effort by Tokyo Dawn Labs and vladg/sound.

This plug-in is an easy to use distance “pan-pot” based on several psycho-acoustic models. The idea is to give mixing engineer a reliable tool which allows him to manipulate the “depth” of several sound sources in a straight forward and convincing manner.

Several models can be combined:

  1. Distance signal delay by speed of sound.
  2. Distance gain loss.
  3. Absorption of high-frequencies in air.
  4. Stereo width manipulation.
  5. Proximity effect of virtual microphone.
  6. Distance based early reflections.

All of them can be turned on and off to taste. Distance modulation options extend the creative possibilities even further. Units can be switched from metric (meters) to imperial (inches).

The plug-in is available in 32 and 64-bits versions for Windows and Mac OS X in VST and AU format.
