Common Image

Common Image free stereo-imaging by Bass Gnomes

Common Image is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Bass Gnomes. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Common Image is an effect designed for stereo content. Common Image inverts the left audio channel, and mixes this inversion with the right audio channel, and vice versa. The result is the unique stereo image per channel, and the phasing out of the mono material.

Common Image can shift mono content in relativity to Stereo Content by using the “relative” position, or it can allow positioning of stereo content while maintaining mono content position by using the “grouped” position

bx_solo

bx_solo free stereo-imaging by Brainworx

bx_solo is a free stereo imaging VST, VST3, Audio Unit, RTAS plugin developed by Brainworx. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

bx_solo is a tool that Brainworx designed to get you started with, and used to, the way they approach the M/S technique – be it for recording-, mixing- or mastering purposes. The “heart” of their M/S tools are the Solo Buttons that allow you to actually listen to all components of a stereo mix / stereo signal individually:

L(left channel), R(ight channel), M(ono sum) & S(tereo difference signal) – all phase corrected (when needed) and mono-ed out on both speakers of your system. This is helpful when working in M/S modes and to check your signals / mixes for errors, noises, clicks, whatever…

bx_solo also contains a stepped M/S stereo width control, so you can get an impression about what you can actually do with it.

M & S solo knobs. free! Just grab it.

bx_solo is a nice little tool that we have designed to get you started with and used to the way we approach the M/S technique – be it for recording-, mixing- or mastering purposes.

Description

L (LEFT channel), R (RIGHT channel), M (MONO sum, mid signal) & S (STEREO-Difference, side signal) – and all this phase-corrected (when needed) and mono-ed out on both speakers of your system. This is very helpful when working in M/S modes (because especially listening to only the S-signal of a stereo mix is not so easy to do with modern DAW stations) and to check your signals / mixes for errors, noises, clicks, whatever…

bx_solo also contains a stepped M/S Stereo Width Control, so you can get an impression about what you can actually do with it. Do try it out on subgroups (makes rock guitar subgroups jump out of your speakers at about 150%!), FX returns, keyboards / samplers, etc.

Using the Stereo Width Control too heavily may lead to phase problems. bx_control & bx_digital both have the Mono Maker on board – this tool will be able to get rid off these phase problems with its unique way of mono-ing out your stereo signals / mixes only in the bass frequencies – Mono Maker is the solution – unless you really over-do the settings…

To be able to fine-adjust the Stereo Width Control (and use Mono Maker at the same time for best results!) please try bx_control.

Features:

  • Fully automatable.
  • “Mouse Over” feature: adjust the parameters by holding the mouse over any knob and simply turn your mouse wheel.
  • Direct access: just type in any valid number into the text fields for direct access to the exact value.

Bformat2Binaural – Ambisonic Binaural Decoder

ZynAddSubFX free software-synthesizer by paulnasca 2

Bformat2Binaural – Ambisonic Binaural Decoder is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Digenis. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Bformat2Binaural – Ambisonic Binaural Decoder allows you to decode up to 1st order Ambisonics for playback over headphones.

In this plug-in, four speaker feeds are derived from an Ambisonic sound field, and those feeds are convolved with the corresponding HRTF for those speaker positions. The speaker positions are 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees. Since the left and right ear HRTF are the same at 0 degrees, there is one less convolution required. Same applies for the rear 180 degree position, avoiding a total of two convolutions as opposed to eight required if the speakers were positioned at 45, 135, 225, and 315 degrees.

While this method requires less processing power, it does not ‘seem’ to provide as clear a sound field as when decoding speaker feeds with positions 45, 135, 225, and 315. More trials need to be done into this.

Even though it uses the compact 128 tap HRTF set available from the MIT Media Lab instead of the full 512 tap set, it uses straight convolution as opposed to FFT convolution, and as a result is quite CPU intensive.

See B-Binaural for an extended version of this plug-in in Audio Unit format, using FFT convolution for faster processing.

Features:

  • 1st order.
  • Horizontal.
  • 128 tap filters.
  • 64 bit processing.

BassLane

BassLane free stereo-imaging by Tone Projects

BassLane is a free stereo imaging VST plugin developed by Tone Projects. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Basslane is used to narrow the stereo width of low frequencies in tracks and mixes. It’s a simple, yet handy utility that allows you to regain bass tightness and prevent “muddy” mixes caused by a too wide low end.

Basslane is also very useful when mastering and especially when mastering for vinyl records. It allows you to transparently prevent problematic stereo content in the low frequencies. The easy-to-use interface features a range of monitoring options allowing precise fine tuning while auditioning the processing at different stages.

  • Easy to use.
  • Transparent stereo sound with classic pan response.
  • 6/12 dB/oct filter switch for variable filter steepness.
  • Width sweepable from full stereo to full mono.
