M-theory

M-theory free software-synthesizer by Ugo

M-theory is a free software synthesizer developed by Ugo. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

M-theory is a physical modeling hybrid synth that provides a very wide range of high quality synthetic and hybrid acoustic modeled sounds. M-theory is the successor to the popular String Theory and, in comparison to its predecessor, M-theory is far more flexible and delivers a much higher quality tone, with greater depth, clarity, and character.

The heart of M-theory is its multi part oscillator system, which allows the user to combine the output two exciters to drive a Karplus-Strong style delay based oscillator. The exciters can be either samples (24 built in, or user loaded), VA oscillators, or noise and each imparts some of its tone to the delay oscillator. Of special note is that even though M-theory can make use of samples it is definitely not a “rompler” since the actual sound of the sample is not retained; only certain characteristics of the tone are passed on to the overall sound. This method makes programming faster and easier while still providing physical modeling flexibility, and allows M-theory to have it’s own unique voice rather than that of the sample.

In addition to is flexible multi-part oscillator system, M-theory also provides extensive filtering options (including the option of mixing low, band, high and all pass filters at the same time), dual programmable phrase arpeggiators, six built in effects, and much more. M-theory comes with 320 presets which range from sounds inspired by natural instruments all the way to other-worldly pads and ambiences.

Key features:

  • Karplus-Strong style synthesis engine.
  • Dual exciters, each with the option of samples, VA or noise sources.
  • Independent low, band, high, and all pass filters.
  • Dual programmable arpeggiators and an extra MIDI note doubler.
  • Built in tremolo, metal effect, chorus, delay, distortion, and reverb.
  • 320 presets.

LuckyWorm

LuckyWorm free software-synthesizer by BipTunia Synths

LuckyWorm is a free software synthesizer developed by BipTunia Synths. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

LuckyWorm is a non-nonsense, yet robust, mono synth. It’s great for heavy bass, forceful leads, crystalline chimes, and more. Has 64 presets.

For an idea of the sound: I was going to call this synth “Emerson, Worms, and Palmer”, but thought I’d receive a lawyer letter, or at least hate mail. lol.

{See video at top of page}

LEGEND:

The two oscillators are called “worm food” and “worm poo.”

“slime” is filter resonance.

“goo” is other filter resonance.

“hard worms” is velocity sensitivity.

“Portobello” switch is portamento.

“shroom time” is portamento time.

“number of worms” is output volume.

“worm hole depth” takes one oscillator slightly out of tune for depth.

“freaks” is a fun little frequency analyzer.

“voodoo” shows fun MIDI numbers and voltages.

“ASDR” is obviously the envelope.

“worm gas” is an ASDR filter.

“breed worms” is speed of delay.

“feed worms” is feedback of delay.

“bendy worms” is amount of pitch bend on wheel.

Also has a built-in waveform display, and a MIDI signal window. These are fun, but also help understand synthesis and MIDI.

Lord of the Springs

Lord of the Springs free software-synthesizer by Taron

Lord of the Springs is a free software synthesizer developed by Taron. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Lord of the Springs is a VSTi for Windows (64/32) featuring 88 voices in form of active spring systems, which a key hit stimulates as well as modwheel scrubbing.

Lord of the Springs V2 overview on YOUTUBE

As one might imagine, springs will generally create rather metallic sounds, which makes it ideal for complex glockenspiel sounds, xylophones, marimbas and so on, but the freedom granted by the features allows for a much greater variety of sounds from soft, dreamy pads to harsh percussion and other percussive sounds.

Beware, though, because it truly is procedural sound creation, potentially creating spikes when you line up the spring frequencies. I advice the use of a limiter to avoid possible heart-attacks or damage to equipment.

It also features a unique pitchbend implementation that allows only held down keys to be pitched, while sustained keys (via sustain pedal) won’t be affected by it. Once a key is released, a pitch relax value controls how quickly it will return to the original pitch of the key. Once the bend key is struck again without any pitch bending, it will be tuned back to normal instantly.

Tip:

  • set it high to create whole new performance styles for quick runs.
  • set it medium for almost chorus like effects when pitching toward a clean key.
  • set it low to keep the pitch bend after releasing the key.

The probably most outlandish feature is the BODY or ONE SPRING TO RULE THEM ALL, which is kind of why I ended up calling it Lord of the Springs. This one spring sits underneath all springs and stimulates all of them by what ever sound they produce. It creates an almost plate reverb like effect, which can be modified in a variety of ways, including its own tuning, decay, diffusion and- what I call- “sharpness”. On top of that it has its own phaser effect with a tremolo that can go stereo and can have its rate synced not just to BPM but to actual song position for a perfect lineup with a beat, if so desired. Subtle use of the phaser can create compelling room impressions as well, which is the original reason for why I implemented it to begin with. The BODY also features a blendable SOLO mode, again increasing the amount of sound creation possibilities somewhat substantially, though, mostly in the realm of special effects.

The entire GUI design is completely procedural without the use of any images, which allows the small file size, but also allows me to go crazy with weird ideas on the fly. If only I had more time to reduce the chaos, but…

I sincerely hope you will enjoy using it, while I had to rush to get it done in time for the challenge. Once voting is over and my hopes and dreams won’t be smashed to pieces (haha), I will happily resume developing further versions. Come to think of it, even with shattered dreams I will continue, because it’s tremendous fun for me.

Best of luck to everyone,
Taron.

LiveTweaker

LiveTweaker free software-synthesizer by Odo Synths

LiveTweaker is a free software synthesizer developed by Odo Synths. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

LiveTweaker is a multi-functional instrument bringing together a 12-slot drum sampler, a drum synth and a monophonic synth in a single plug-in.

Conceived with live use in mind, the idea is to have 3 instruments on one single track for quick & easy tweaking using a MIDI controller. The second idea is to avoid sterile repetition of the same thing by including various random features. You can achieve subtle variations on a snare’s pitch, a cymbal’s decay, or simulate the osc pitch instability of an old analogue synth, but you can also turn your pattern into something totally different after each repetition. Livetweaker aims to keep things both simple, quick, and easy to use, all along with deep user customizable features for more sonic control.

Little Spiral Generator

Little Spiral Generator free software-synthesizer by Soundemote

Little Spiral Generator is a free software synthesizer developed by Soundemote. Available format(s): VST, Audio Unit for Windows 64b, macOS.

This is the first in a series of oscilloscope-music inspired products and pairs perfectly with PrettyScope. Spiral Generator uses an algorithm created by Jerobeam Fenderson. There will be more advanced 2D and 3D synthesizers released in the future for serious music production and sound design:

  • Features Jerobeam Fenderson’s very own algorithm which generates a fractal spiral that is infinitely zoomable by modulating the “Morph” parameter.
  • All parameters automatable.
  • Creates some mean vocal basses.
  • Infinitely rotatable by modulating the “RotY” and “RotX” parameters.
  • Use the “ZAmount” parameter to engage chaotic feedback, great for sound design and fx.
  • 6 assignable LFOs.
  • 5 Velocity-sensitive assignable ADSRs.
  • 6 Assignable MIDI modulation sources.
  • Selectable oversampling from 1x to 8x (I could increase that range if needed).
  • Soft-clipper at the output will saturate the signal as you increase the output gain.
