PhysiX

ZynAddSubFX free software-synthesizer by paulnasca 2

PhysiX is a free software synthesizer developed by Obertone Audio. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

PhysiX does true physical modelling using the “nodes and mass model”. It simulates up to 64 nodes per voice and “true physical inter-modulation coupling” (one swinging wave affects the behaviour of the others).

Features:

  • Unusual sound.
  • 23 different node and mass models.
  • 11 different excitement modes.
  • 2 wave coupling modes.

NOTE: PhysiX uses the hosts’s default GUI.

Phybes

Phybes free software-synthesizer by xoxos

Phybes is a free software synthesizer developed by xoxos. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Phybes is a physically modeled VST instrument suited for emulation of vibraphone and similar mallet instruments. A mass-spring modeled mallet impulse is applied to a banded waveguide to produce continuous tonal variation in response to dynamic performance. A coupled waveguide creates resonator and modulation effects to provide a low resource emulation with pleasing dynamic timbrality suitable for many compositional applications.

PhybAce Pilot

PhybAce Pilot free software-synthesizer by Fsynthz

PhybAce Pilot is a free software synthesizer developed by Fsynthz. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

PhybAce is a physically modeled bass guitar (Note: SynthEdit was used for GUI and FX only; the tone generator is based on original C++ code). The model includes:

  • string;
  • pick (stiffness, position, picking way);
  • body resonances;
  • two pickups (with positions);
  • “slide mode” for legato up, etc.

PhybAce Pilot is a test of the platform, coming with limited set of features/controls, still coming close enough to the full-scale power of the model. It is intended to collect opinions and suggestions for the further development.

Phase-Warper

Phase-Warper free software-synthesizer by DocNashSynths

Phase-Warper is a free software synthesizer developed by DocNashSynths. Available format(s): for Windows .

Phase-Warper features a sound production method called ‘Vector Phase Synthesis’, which distorts the phase of a sine wave by a 2-dimensional vector. As the co-ordinates of the bending point of the vector are varied, a wide range of wave shapes are produced, including ‘formants’ centred around harmonics of the fundamental frequency, creating human voice-like effects.

You can see from the screenshot that unlike traditional subtractive synths, there are no wave shape selectors or filters here, as the technique doesn’t require them.

Phase-Warper can be considered a ‘method showcase’ product as it introduces a novel synthesis technique via a functioning product, so as to bring it to the attention of other developers who may then choose to evolve and incorporate it into their existing or future products.

Of course Phase-Warper is useable as-is, as a stand-alone, unrestricted real time synth for producing a variety of new sounds and textures, just lacking in ‘trimmings’ like the ability to save and load patches.

PG-23P

PG-23P free software-synthesizer by Stumm

PG-23P is a free software synthesizer developed by Stumm. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

PG-23P is an emulation of the Roland JX-3P from the PG-200 programmer’s interface. It was developed using a physical JX-3P and available specifications in order to match all routing, depth, tuning, and value ranges as closely as possible. It has all the characteristics and features of the JX-3P’s synthesis including:

  • Multi-Routed ENV and LFO Destinations, with Depth and Post ON/OFF switches for quick switching of Patch variations.
  • The JX-3P PWM ‘trick’. Set Cross Mod to Sync, Mix to DCO-2 and control the tuning of DCO-2 (manually or with the LFO) to achieve Pulse Width Modulation.
  • Separate POS. and NEG. ADSR positions for the Pitch and Filter.
  • 3 Cross Modulation modes: NONE, SYNC, and METAL (a type of Ringmod w/ DCO-1 as the carrier).
  • Built in Chorus.
  • Turn Velocity Sensitivity to 0 to accurately recreate the JX-3P’s keyboard, or turn it to 10 to recreate the velocity sensitivity that was only to it available through MIDI-IN.
  • Global Highpass Filter and VCA Modes: ENV (which uses the ADSR) or GATE (on/off response, no velocity sensitivity).
  • 6 Voice, 12 Oscillators with Sine, Narrow-Pulse, Pulse-Saw, and Noise waveforms.

Full Specifications:

  • Polyphonic.
  • DCO:
    Osc1:
    • Sine, Narrow-Pulse and Pulse-Saw.
    • Octave Range: 16′, 8′, 4′.
    • Modulation: LFO or ENV (Positive or Negative).

    Osc2:

    • Sine, Narrow-Pulse, Pulse-Saw, Noise.
    • Octave Range: 16′, 8′, 4′.
    • Tune (transpose) ± 12 semitones.
    • Fine Tune ± .65 semitones.
    • Modulation: LFO or ENV (Positive or Negative).
    • Cross MOD: None, Sync and Metal (sync+ringmod).

Particle Fountain

Particle Fountain free software-synthesizer by ndc Plugs

Particle Fountain is a free software synthesizer developed by ndc Plugs. Available format(s): VST for Windows, macOS.

Particle Fountain is a monophonic synth that attaches a sound (either a sawtooth or a square wave) to a bunch of particles, which move in a 2d space like a fountain. The particles’ position in the space then determines certain aspects of the sound (frequency, amplitude, panning). There can be up to 200 particles in use at any one time.
