SynthFont

SynthFont is a free sequencer stand alone application developed by Kenneth Rundt. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b.

SynthFont 1 is a free tool for playing/rendering MIDI files using SoundFonts and other similar sound sources (WAV, DLS, GIGA and also VST Instruments).

SynthFont2 is the second generation of SynthFont and has a number of new features and improvements. It costs €15.

SynthFont is intended to mimic the behavior of SoundFont compatible hardware/soundcards like SoundBlaster Live! or Audigy and SynthFont is (almost) modulator aware, which Live! is not. But SynthFont is more. It provides an interface into the SoundFont structure and has basic editing capabilities. It also displays various data about the loaded MIDI file through the piano roll and the event list. Finally, there is a simple playlist feature for storing the files you are currently working on.

SynthFont also supports VST effects – there are 17 busses in all: one master bus and 16 channel busses.

VSTSynthFont (VSF), a separate VST instrument version of SynthFont is also available.

Synthetik is a free VST and AU plugin delivering fresh inspiring sounds and FX for Hip-Hop and R&B productions including synths, bells, synth bass, brass, electric pianos, pads, strings and more.

The Synthetik VST/AU Plugin is called a “semi-synth” because it does not posses all of the traditional functions of a full synthesizer. Instead, Synthetik has really high quality sounds out of the box that can be fine-tuned and tweaked further using the LFO settings, Reverb and ADSR. Synthetik has glide control and the full range of play modes such as Mono, Poly and Legato.

Synthetik is compatible with all music software supporting VST or AU format on both Windows and Mac.

SyncSawSynth

SyncSawSynth is a free software synthesizer developed by Uhhyou. Available format(s): VST3 for Windows 64b, macOS, Linux.

Note: Currently Linux build doesn’t display GUI due to some problem related to VSTGUI. For Linux, LV2 version is available at https://github.com/ryukau/LV2Plugins.

Note: I don’t have mac so macOS build is not tested. If you find bug, please report it to https://github.com/ryukau/VSTPlugins.

SyncSawSynth is a synthesizer equipped with up to 10th order PTR sawtooth oscillator. PTR stands for polynomial transition regions which is an aliasing suppressing technique. As the name suggests, this one hard syncs:

Equipped with 2 of 0 to 10th order PTR sawtooth oscillator.

Can also use sin. However, hard sync for sin is not alias suppressed.

3 types of hard sync option. Only use “Ratio” option for tonal sound.

Phase controls. Possible to make a square wave with phase inversion.

Frequency modulation between 2 oscillators. You can be a noise musician in a second.

1 AD envelope, 1 sin LFO and 1 pink noise generator for frequency modulation. The AD envelope uses equation (t^a * exp(-b * t)).

Exponential ADSR envelope saturated with tanh for output gain.

Equipped a filter that is serially connected 4 RBJ biquad with feedback. Low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch can be used.

4 types of filter feedback saturation.

Linear ADSR envelope for filter cutoff and resonance. The output of filter envelope is logarithmically mapped to cutoff frequency.

Key follow for filter cutoff and resonance.

Some optimization made into version 0.1.3, however it’s still a bit slow. To keep CPU consumption lower, reduce maximum number of voice.

Sxratch

Sxratch is a free vinyl emulator VST plugin developed by KlangLabs. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b.

Sxratch is a free “Virtual Scratcher”.

Filter section:

Resonance, High Freqs, Low Freqs.

Sensitivity section:

Start and End knobs: They set the range points where you want to scratch, useful to get more accurate scratching moves.

Accel: Acceleration or “torque” of the scratcher after you click then release over the scratching slider.

SMTH (Smoothing): Sets the smoothness of the scratch moves.

Main section:

VOL: Sets the main volume.

PITCH: Sets the “speed” of the “record” (RESET button to reset knob to original pitch).

REW: Plays the sound backwards.

File section:

FILE button: Click on it to load a *.wav file. (Sxratch works better with files shorter than 10 seconds).

Record button: It records the input signal, useful for live use, pick snippets from your band mates and scratch over that.

Surge

SuperSpread

SuperSpread is a free pitch shifter and stereo imaging VST, VST3, Audio Unit plugin developed by lkjb. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

SuperSpread uses multiple pitch shifters to spread a signal thus allowing supersawing any input it is given.

Besides using it on any synths it is also a handy tool to create pseudo double tracking for guitars or to a lesser extend vocals. In case of guitars, it is best applied on a clean DI recording before amp simulations.
