Surge

SuperSpread

SuperSpread is a free pitch shifter and stereo imaging VST, VST3, Audio Unit plugin developed by lkjb. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

SuperSpread uses multiple pitch shifters to spread a signal thus allowing supersawing any input it is given.

Besides using it on any synths it is also a handy tool to create pseudo double tracking for guitars or to a lesser extend vocals. In case of guitars, it is best applied on a clean DI recording before amp simulations.

SubRingFM

SubRingFM is a free ring modulator Audio Unit plugin developed by Music Unfolding. Compatible OS(s): macOS.

SubRingFM is a ring modulator. It also has two filters for shaping the sound, plus a sub-octave generator. The oscillator can be manipulated using FM.

The effect runs through a pre-filter to the ring modulator to a post-filter and then into a sub-octave generator. You can use the pre-filter to reduce the number of harmonics in the input signal and use the post-filter to shape the resulting tone. The ring modulator oscillator is an FM oscillator, so the resulting output can be made to contain a very complex set of frequencies. This can then be shaped using the post-filter to get a really wide range of sounds. The sub-octave generator is then applied.

The magic of using synthesis (instead of sampling vintage hardware) is that sounds can be tweaked in a way sampled-based VST drum machines won’t let you. Also it’s just 35MB (sampling all of the variations you have on SUB will require 4GB of samples).
