Flextron DC14

Flextron DC14 free amp-simulator by AXP

Flextron DC14 is a free amp simulator VST plugin developed by AXP. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Flextron is a virtual-analog guitar amp based on a concept of the hybrid guitar distortion pedal I’ve built for myself a while ago. The prototype pedal in its turn was based on two commercial tube emulation technologies – Flexwave by Crate and Cooltron by VOX. This combination was discovered by accident when I was repairing my bandmate’s VOX Bulldog distortion pedal. I didn’t like the Bulldog that much, however I got interested in its low-voltage tube design so I assembled a copy on a test bench. On its own it has provided very little overdrive, just as expected, but when combined with the Crate Flexwave preamp (my favorite solid-state distortion) it has completed its already great tone, giving it more fullness and presence. I’ve used this arrangement for rehearsals and some gigs and got complemented for the tone.

Flextron goes a step further and accurately models a range of Crate solid-state amps powered by the Flexwave circuit. Every stage of the preamp signal path is carefully analyzed and modeled with the same attention to details as my previous SoftDrive GV and SoftAmp FM25 plugins.

The Flexwave amp design has evolved over the years. I counted 6 different variations. After careful analysis, I’ve narrowed down the scope to 3 models. The one I’ve played with was made in the late 90’s and I think it’s ahead of the pack. However in 2000’s they have changed the gain channel structure significantly and after some consideration I’ve decided to model all three.

The Cooltron circuit in its turn stayed the same across their pedal range. I’ve tried a couple of different approaches to modeling it before settling on the final one. Since I’ve had a real physical implementation at my disposal I was able to successfully verify the accuracy of the digital model.

Interestingly, both Flexwave and Cooltron follow exactly the same idea – they essentially are an asymmetric clipping stage biased by the low-passed feedback signal. Having made my own SoftAmp 3OD model I can say that this is exactly how a real guitar amp triode stage works. The main difference is that Cooltron uses a 12AU7 tube running on 6V anode voltage for the authentic tube waveshaping, while Flexwave relies on an asymmetrically configured “rubber diode” pair to achieve the same effect.

In addition to the fully featured 3-channel preamp and a tube saturation stage, Flextron offers a dual-mode stereo reverb (algorithmic and convolution-based), a speaker simulator with two cabinet models and an ambience control (intended mainly for practising in headphones), a switchable order oversampling and a set of visualization instruments, such as an EQ curve plot and stage bias meters.

Just as with my previous plugins, every single control is remapped to produce linear response on a dB scale.

Additional details can be found in the bundled manual.

Ferret 4×4

Ferret 4x4 free routing by eaReckon

Ferret 4×4 is a free routing VST, Audio Unit plugin developed by eaReckon. Compatible OS(s): Windows, macOS.

Ferret 4×4 has been designed to add more audio routing capabilities to BloXpander by taking advantage of its sidechaining and multi-output capabilities. However, it can be used in some other DAWs to create audio links between different channels/tracks.

Ferret 4×4 features four pairs of inputs and four pairs of outputs, each of them having its own adjustable level and pan parameters. The internal behavior of Ferret 4×4 is quite basic: inputs are mixed down and the resulting stereo signal is sent to outputs depending on user settings.

This plug-in can be used to create extra “aux return” channels, mix down multiple signals to be sent to a single effect or a physical output, create headphone mixes, etc.

Please note that how easy (or even possible) it is to use Ferret4x4 highly depends on the host’s audio routing capabilities.

Experimental Combo Emulation

Experimental Combo Emulation free amp-simulator by 7AMP Around Music Portal

Experimental Combo Emulation is a free amp simulator Stand Alone, VST plugin developed by 7AMP Around Music Portal. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

7AMP Experimental Combo Emulator is a guitar amp emulation software with unusual sound. It was created to test some guitar sound processing ideas and then transformed into free of pay amp emulator to achieve rare sounds at repetition or recording. For it’s experimental nature it is not an emulation of any really existing guitar amp. It’s goals are some original clean sounds, good “strained” overdriven solo sound, and staccatos.

The standalone emulator version supports connecting of multiple guitars simultaneously. It has advantage of recording input signal from 2 guitars and built in scheme for noise reduction, which appears before recording and rest of processing chain. It helps to record cleaner guitar sound, that is often important when recording or playing at PC, cause guitar sustainer and distortion highly amplify noise usually. Complex two band limiter which may act like sustainer at input helps to control sound dynamics before overdrive.

All parts of 7AMP Experimental Combo Emulator are available as standalone VST plugins.

Emissary

Emissary free amp-simulator by Ignite Amps

Emissary is a free amp simulator VST, VST3, Audio Unit, AAX plugin developed by Ignite Amps. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

The Emissary is a digital emulation of a custom dual channel guitar tube amplifier. It has been developed to accurately model its real hardware counterpart, built for Ryan Huthnance (The Seer / Gaped / Chrome Bison / Emissary Studios) by Ignite Amps, in 2014.

The Emissary is a no compromise custom amp built for the kill. Featuring a very versatile clean channel that ranges from pristine cleans to slightly overdriven tones and a mean lead channel designed for serious bone-crushing distortions, it offers a very wide tonal palette for the modern metal musician.

Every single component on the signal path of the real analog circuit has been taken into account and modeled in the best possible way to match the original sound, keeping an eye on CPU performance and real-time playability at the same time.

The plug-in GUI has been 3D modeled and rendered by Voger Design, in order to resemble the real amplifier as much as possible.

The Emissary is meant to be used as a virtual guitar amplifier for live playing and jamming, tracking or mixing inside hosts capable of AAX, AU VST or VST3 Plug-Ins support.

E-Kit Trigger

E-Kit Trigger free audio-to-midi by TbT

E-Kit Trigger is a free audio to midi VST plugin developed by TbT. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

E-Kit Trigger is designed to work with trigger mic’s such as the Redshot trigger from Clavia(Ddrum) or any Piezzo based drum pad.

It will work with pre-recorded tracks but the performance depends on the recording (the plug only analyze the amplitude, not the content).

You’ll need a soundcard that can go down to ca 3-6 ms latency if you want to get “realtime” action. The more inputs you got on your soundcard the more drums you can connect to your PC.
