Cobalt

Cobalt free software-synthesizer by Sanford Sound Design

Cobalt is a free software synthesizer developed by Sanford Sound Design. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Cobalt is a VSTi software synthesizer inspired by many of the digital synthesizers from the 1980s.

In the early 80s as digital technology became cheaper, many manufacturers designed synthesizers that combined earlier analog technology with newer digital technology. These were known as hybrid synthesizers. Well-known hybrid synthesizers are the Korg DW8000 and DW6000, the Ensoniq ESQ-1, and the Kawai K3.

In analog/digital hybrid synthesizers, the oscillators responsible for generating waveforms are digital while the filter section remains analog. This approach freed designers to use any kind of waveform; they were no longer restricted to traditional analog waveforms such as sawtooth, triangle, and pulse. However, by using an analog filter, these synthesizers retained the warmth earlier analog synthesizers were known for.

Though Cobalt is a purely digital synthesizer, its overall architecture is very much like those early hybrid synthesizers. It features a wide selection of waveforms, most of which were resynthesized from actual hybrid synthesizers, while providing traditional subtractive synthesis capabilities for sculpting its sound.

Key Features:

  • GUI created by grymmjack.
  • 26 waveforms – many of which were resynthesized from 80s hybrid synths.
  • Flexible modulation routes.
  • Apply PWM to any waveform.
  • LFO delay.
  • Polyphonic Portamento.
  • Key tracked envelopes.
  • Rich overdrive effect based on a custom algorithm.
  • Stereo delay effect with MIDI synchable delay times.
  • Easy to use.

Catalyst

Catalyst free software-synthesizer by Broken Gadget

Catalyst is a free software synthesizer developed by Broken Gadget. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Catalyst produces hybrid waveforms by taking two oscillators, applying half wave rectification then sticking the results together to form some unusual waveshapes. The focus of the synth is producing some interesting, dynamic waveforms. The concepts may not be that familiar, however the synth has been designed so that each control does something meaningful and useful. There is an in depth manual on the developer’s site explaining what’s going on ‘under the hood’ and 64 presets to get you started.

The synth has been featured in Computer Music Magazine: “Different is good and Catalyst is nothing if not different.”.

Update, June 2013: The calibration of the control linking the envelope to the filter cutoff has been modified to yield a deeper envelope to cutoff modulation.

The short sound demo is created entirely with Catalyst. No external effects used, just a little mix compression.

Boomed-FM II

Boomed-FM II free software-synthesizer by SpearGear

Boomed-FM II is a free software synthesizer developed by SpearGear. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Boomed-Fm II is a hybrid FM/Phase Distortion synthesizer which produces clean or distorted sound from many ranges: Strings, bass, keys, leads, pads, etc.

Features:

  • Oscillators and envelopes: Six combined oscillators (modulators and carriers). Separately for every combined oscillator, there is a Low Pass 4-pole moog-style filter with adjustable cut frequency. Afterwards there is fine-tuning and Phase modulation adjustment for an analog sense. Mixer adjusts the level from oscillators and enables or disables output.
  • Master Filter: Biquad filter with enveloped frequency-CUT. There are three filter modes: Constant Skirt Gain (CSG), Constant 0db Peak Gain (COPK), and Peak. If Peak is selected, Gain/Attenuation can be adjusted from -60 to 24 db.
  • Delay: Delay module if selected creates stereo output. “Full In” and “Normal” delay mode. The first one is used for soft distortion and feedback modulation, while other gives delayed stereo sound with adjustable speed and timing.
  • Chorus: Stereo input and fat stereo output with high quality signal processing.
  • MIDI: MIDI section allows to choose playing Octave, select Mono mode (which enables Retrigger function), There’s also velocity level and Portamento Time adjustments.
  • 82 presets in two SoundBanks.

Atlantis

Atlantis free software-synthesizer by Jeremy Evers

Atlantis is a free software synthesizer developed by Jeremy Evers. Available format(s): VST for Windows 64b.

Atlantis consists of Atlantis Synthesizer, a VST instrument, and Atlantis Filter Delay, a powerful VST effect plug-in.

Atlantis Overview.

3 true stereo morphing oscillators, with independent width, phase, spread, chorus, tuning, volume, envelope and panning feed into a pair of filters (with standard algorithms and many unique new ones), a shaper (distortions and beyond), and a simple room modelling multi-tap filtered delay system with another pair of selectable filters. The routing of the filters and shaper can also be switched into a variety of configurations for further flexibility.

All the standard waveforms you would expect (sin, square, triangle, saw, noise) – and you can also import any waveform you like. Simply add a .wav file with the waveform you want to hear to the c:chips folder – stereo or mono, any samplerate or bitdepth you like, and Atlantis will let you use it for oscillators and LFOs. Samples are upsampled into high resolution wavetables.

Every slider parameter can be controlled by any modulator. LFOs, Envelopes, MIDI Control Data, the current note, velocity, or combinations of them can be used to modulate your sounds into “expressive organic creations”.

The synth also offers selectable Polyphonic, Monophonic, Portamento and Arpeggio modes.
