L3V3LL3R

L3V3LL3R is a free compressor VST plugin developed by platinumears. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

L3V3LL3R is a faithful model of the legendary “Leveller” hardware compressor from the ’60s. These units are extremely rare and collectable due to the fact that less than one of them was ever made and sold. On the plus side, this did make it possible for platinumears to collect together ALL surviving examples, and thereby create a modelled VST version that is actually more like the original units than the original units were themselves.

The compressor uses an algorithm which is somewhere between feed-forward and feed-backward and which platinumears has therefore dubbed “feed sideways”. It can be gentle and subtle if you want it to be. But its more fun when you slam it hard, especially on drums.

Krolar SX-2

The Krolar SX-2 was inspired by the 1978/9 hardware Roland synth, the SH-2.

Features:

OSC1: sine/saw/pulse.

OSC2: saw/pulse/noise.

SubOsc: square (-1 oct below the settings of OSC1).

Modulator (LFO): sine/square/S&H with rate and delay.

AutoBend: begins below/above (-2/+2 octaves) key pressed and slides to that pitch.

PWM: LFO/MAn/Env – the slider adjusts the pulse width or the amount of LFO/Env modulation (the LFO for PWM is a smooth sine with no delay).

Pitch Mod: controls amount of pitch modulation by the LFO.

Tuning: OSC2 has its own tuning section, Wide and Narrow (+/-1750 cents or +/-200 cents).

The SH-2 was monophonic, Krolar SX-2 has a small red button (top right) that allows you to switch from monophonic (low note priority) to polyphonic (6 voices).

Karnage

Karnage is the result of a collaboration between Krakli Software and Kriminal.

Two oscillators with width (fatness setting) and wave-shape control, a sub oscillator/white noise oscillator mixable with a level control.

24db/12db Filter modulated by a dedicated envelope, velocity, and up to 2 LFOs.

A dedicated ring modulation section that can use keyboard tracking, velocity, envelope, and up to 2 LFOs for modulation of Ring Freq.

The generator section has just one multi-oscillator. The basic waveform generator is very simple adjustable mix of sawtooth and square wave. The multi-oscillator uses quite unusual technique that generates a single fundamental signal independently of the (multiple) overtones, preventing the beating effect that arises where several oscillators are output in slightly detuned unison, yet preserving the full and fat sound on the overtone spectrum. The method enables building very rich and vivid sounds on a perfectly solid bottom and is especially useful in creating tight bass and low register lead sounds.
