SynthWiz Simple Synth

SynthWiz Simple Synth is a free software synthesizer developed by Noise Sculpture. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

SynthWiz Simple Synth has been designed to illustrate some of the concepts in the book “Becoming a Synthesizer Wizard: From Presets to Power User” by Simon Cann (published by Course Technology PTR, ISBN: 978-1598635508). The synthesizer is available to download for free (i.e. you don’t need to buy the book to get the synth).

The synthesizer has been specifically designed to be a straightforward synthesizer with a limited set of features (one oscillator, one low-pass filter, one envelope to control the filter cut-off, and one envelope to control the volume). SynthWiz Simple Synth isn’t a synthesizer you are likely to use everyday, instead it has two specific purposes:

First, it is intended as a straightforward synthesizer for anyone looking to get to grip on subtractive synthesis and sound design basics. These principles are demonstrated with this synthesizer in Becoming a Synthesizer Wizard and they can then be applied to any synthesizer.

Second, it is intended for people who want to develop an understanding about modular synthesizers and how to create synthesizers using SynthEdit (SynthWiz Simple Synth was built with SynthEdit and the underlying SynthEdit files are also available for free download). As you would expect, you are walked through the construction of the synthesizer in Becoming a Synthesizer Wizard.

SynthTrack

SynthTrack is a free filter VST plugin developed by 2Rule. Compatible OS(s): Windows, macOS.

SynthTrack is a rhythmic effect plugin that uses track audio as a source. Applied to audio tracks (chords, vocals etc..), this plugin makes Filter/Amp ADSR and LFO effects triggered by 16 step sequencer pattern. With this effect, you can change rhythmic characteristic of the wave in the track. It’s suitable for creating typical rhythmic gated pad sounds. With the envelope controlled step sequencer, it’s possible to turn your pad sound into an arp-like sequence.
This plugin can be synchronized to the host sequencer / DAW tempo when available.

SynthTest

SynthTest is a free routing plugin developed by Creed. Compatible OS(s): macOS.

SynthTest is a simple application for OS X that allows you to pick a MIDI source, a MusicDevice AudioUnit and an Effect or MusicEffect AudioUnit to play with. You can open an edit window for both the synth and effect. If they do not have a custom edit GUI, the generic editor view will be used.

It is primarily intended to be used by Audio Unit developers for testing purposes, although it can be fun to play with all by itself. In the end, I would like SynthTest to become an open reference implementation of an AudioUnit host.

SynthMaster Player for iOS

SynthMaster Player for iOS is a free software synthesizer developed by KV331 Audio. Available format(s): stand alone application for iOS.

SynthMaster Player for iOS is the mobile player version of SynthMaster for iPad and iPhone devices. It is targeted towards users who prefer to use presets rather than designing their own sounds during music production.

Although it is a preset based player, users can edit the following parameters:

8 easy parameters assigned by the sound designer.

2 XY Pads assigned by the sound designer.

Effect bypass states and send amounts.

Layer bypass states and volumes.

Master volume, polyphony.

The free app comes with 100 factory presets. When users complete registration by entering their names and email addresses they receive another 100 factory presets as a bonus. After completing registration, users can upgrade to the Pro version of the app by purchasing the “Factory Presets” bank via In-App-Purchase (IAP) for $4.99. With the Pro Upgrade all of the 800 factory presets are loaded and also the following features are unlocked:

Users can save the changes they have made to the presets.

Users can purchase additional preset banks via In-App-Purchase (IAP).

Existing SynthMaster users can download their previously purchased SynthMaster preset banks inside the app, so that they don’t have to purchase them again.

Existing SynthMaster users can export their own presets (starting with SynthMaster v2.7) and import them into SynthMaster Player for iPad using iTunes.

Buil-in Keyboard

The built-in 2 octave keyboard with pitch and modulation wheels lets users play notes without having to connect an external MIDI controller to their iPad. With its Scale functionality, it shows the users the notes on the scale, and with its Chord functionality the user can play a certain chord by pressing a single note.

Midi Settings

SynthMaster Player for iPad supports CoreMIDI and also virtual MIDI. It acts as a virtual MIDI destination for other DAW apps. MIDI input device, MIDI input channel, and receive MIDI beat clock settings can be adjusted from the MIDI Settings window.

InterApp Audio

SynthMaster Player for iPad acts as an source/instrument in InterApp Audio. We demonstrate in our user manual how to connect it to InterApp enabled DAW apps.

AudioBus

SynthMaster Player for iPad acts as a source/instrument in AudioBus, with state saving enabled. We demonstrate in our user manual how to connect it to AudioBus enabled DAW apps.

System Requirements:

Minimum Operating System Supported: iOS 8.0.

Minimum Hardware Supported: iPad 3rd Generation, iPhone 5.

Recommended Hardware: iPad Air and above, iPhone 6 and above.

SynthFont

SynthFont is a free sequencer stand alone application developed by Kenneth Rundt. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b.

SynthFont 1 is a free tool for playing/rendering MIDI files using SoundFonts and other similar sound sources (WAV, DLS, GIGA and also VST Instruments).

SynthFont2 is the second generation of SynthFont and has a number of new features and improvements. It costs €15.

SynthFont is intended to mimic the behavior of SoundFont compatible hardware/soundcards like SoundBlaster Live! or Audigy and SynthFont is (almost) modulator aware, which Live! is not. But SynthFont is more. It provides an interface into the SoundFont structure and has basic editing capabilities. It also displays various data about the loaded MIDI file through the piano roll and the event list. Finally, there is a simple playlist feature for storing the files you are currently working on.

SynthFont also supports VST effects – there are 17 busses in all: one master bus and 16 channel busses.

VSTSynthFont (VSF), a separate VST instrument version of SynthFont is also available.

Synthetik is a free VST and AU plugin delivering fresh inspiring sounds and FX for Hip-Hop and R&B productions including synths, bells, synth bass, brass, electric pianos, pads, strings and more.

The Synthetik VST/AU Plugin is called a “semi-synth” because it does not posses all of the traditional functions of a full synthesizer. Synthetic Vortice

Synthetic Vortice virtual instrument is a free sound bank for Sforzando, by SampleScience.

Synthetic Vortices is an ambient sample library produced using an Ensoniq Fizmo synthesizer. Each sample is seamlessly looped using the accompanied sfz mapping files.
