Bit Twiddler

Bit Twiddler is a free multi fx and modulation and bit crusher plugin developed by DocNashSynths. Compatible OS(s): Windows .

Manipulate the bits of a sinewave to create rich sounds which change as they play.

Bit Twiddler converts each sample of a simple sinewave to 8 bits, and then lets you shift, re-arrange and flip those bits. This results in the creation of highly complex waveforms.

Bit Twiddler can be considered a ‘method showcase’ product as it introduces a novel synthesis technique via a functioning product, so as to bring it to the attention of other developers who may then choose to evolve and incorporate it into their existing or future products.

Of course Bit Twiddler is useable as-is, as a stand-alone, unrestricted synth for producing a variety of new sounds and textures. The application provides controls for dynamically changing the amplitude of the sinewave prior to the bit operations, as this alters the waveform shape by accentuating certain wave segments and suppressing others, and changes the sound without any perceived ‘discontinuities’ (as long as the range of amplitude change is constrained by the user to certain bounds).

It is just that the application is lacking in ‘trimmings’ like the ability to save and load patches.

Bit Fluzer

Bit Fluzer is a free bit crusher VST, Audio Unit plugin developed by NUSofting. Compatible OS(s): Windows 64b, macOS.

Bit Fluzer is an audio effect similar to standard “bit crushers”, but featuring two channels with input filters and audio bit reductions modulated by two LFOs. Using the Bit Fluzer plugin you can alter the bit depth of the audio signal from your instruments or audio tracks in your DAW in various ways. The two bit depth controls range from one to 20 bits in continuous fashion, moreover the bit depth can be made to rhythmically oscillate with the LFOs. That way you can obtain a range of mono or stereo modulating effects: from subtle “sound warming”, due to the soft noise introduced by a little bit depth reduction, to more aggressive distortions and groovy patterns. The two channels can work independently on different sections of the audio spectrum, since one channel features a lowpass filter and the other a highpass filter.

We release this freeware effect plugin also to advocate the main motives of repair.org, that is to rise awareness about the possible “progressive loss of rights” of users to fix and maintain their own electronic devices. Channel 1 features a Lowpass filter. Channel 2 features a Highpass filter.

Both channels take the input as mono: left + right:

Channel 1: left + right >>>input gain >>> lowpass >>> bith depth >>> output gain >>> pan.

You can create a new stereo image on the output using the pan controls.

The LFOs when “free running” the rate range is 0.01 to 26.00 Hertz, when in “sync” the rate range is 1 bar to 1/32 (assuming a 4/4 time signature), and it will modulate the bit reductions relatively to the value of the bit depth controls.

The level of the input can be adjusted between -12 and +12 dB.

The dry/wet slider allows to mix the stereo input with the effected signals.

All parameters can be automated inside a DAW.

Bipro

Bipro is a free eq and filter VST plugin developed by Noisebud. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Bipro – The Low end fix unicorn magic thing…. Nah, it’s a low-end controller.

Bipro is a plugin with different tools to control the very low end, that is below 50Hz. It’s very common that mixes made with small speakers (6″ and even 8″ inch speakers) have problems in the low end simply because they’re not able to reproduce what’s going on down there. When you try to push a mix like that to compete with commercial levels it will start to sound bad and misbehave in all kind of ways. You can hear and see one example what can happen and how to use Bipro to fix that in the demonstration video below.

Binvert

Binvert is a free eq and enhancer VST plugin developed by Noisebud. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Binvert was originally meant to be a plain mix tool to handle phase problems when mixing several bass heavy channels, but the users seemed to use it mainly to deepen or sculpt the low end. Development have therefore been focused on the usability as a bass sculpturing tool even though the original functionality is still there.

The result is a versatile tool that you can use either as originally intended, extreme bass drum sounds or for a subtle boost in the low end while mastering.

Binvert takes the signal and splits in into two bands (split point is adjustable between 25-440Hz). After the split there’s a phase invert for both bands so you can invert the polarity of the two bands independently from each other. Problem fixed, the bass is still heavy and the mid/high transients stay crisp. You can also make that frequency resonate on either or both the upper and lower bands and you can also steer that extra energy with a ADSR curve.

BillaBoop is a free drum machine VST plugin developed by MTG. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

BillaBoop is a voice-driven drum synth, developed by Amaury Hazan at Music Technology Group (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona). It lets the user control drum synths, samplers, and effects with their voice, and focuses on percussive signals.

Segregation of the vocal stream into three drums (Bass Drum, Snare Drum and Hi Hat) is achieved using machine learning techniques, so that the user has few tweaks to do to start to control the drums. Two segregation modes are available, the first uses a beat box model made with the recordings of beat-boxers and behaves well for microphone control, while the other tries to separate the incoming sounds (more intelligent but less predictable), and is more efficient for processing complex polyphonic recordings.

The system is implemented as a VST plug-in (Signal Analysis, Onset/Offset Detection, Vocal Hits Segregation) coded in C++ with CLAM Library for Audio and Music library. It works using a frame size of 1024 samples and is fast enough for real-time performance.

NOTE: BillaBoop is currently only really suitable for use in the Plogue Bidule modular framework to control synthesizers, effects, and samplers and the download includes a Bidule layout. They plan to improve the compatibility with other plug-in hosts in the future.
