Cygnus

Cygnus free software-synthesizer by Krakli

Cygnus is a free software synthesizer developed by Krakli. Available format(s): VST for Windows.

Developed as a collaboration between Krakli Software and sound designer Tim Conrardy, Cygnus is a “space synth” in both looks and tones. 3 distinctly different tonal sources are mixed in stereo through various sound modulators. The quality of the sound is further affected by 3 sequencer rows which can affect note pitch or act as configurable LFOs. The GUI is designed to be anything but conventional but the inclusion of switchable labels makes everything a little bit more manageable for those that like to know what they are tweaking.

Cyclone – Vintage Sampler Emulator

Cyclone - Vintage Sampler Emulator free software-synthesizer by Sonic Charge

Cyclone – Vintage Sampler Emulator is a free software synthesizer developed by Sonic Charge. Available format(s): VST, Audio Unit for Windows 64b, macOS.

Cyclone is a clone of a machine that runs Typhoon: a complete TX16W software emulator in VST and Audio Unit formats.

Cyclone is a true low-level hardware emulator. It simulates all the important circuits of the Yamaha TX16W, including the main 68000 CPU, the proprietary Yamaha DSP circuits, the 12-bit sample memory and the 400kHz non-linear DACs. Cyclone not only looks like a real TX16W, it sounds like a real TX16W and it runs the exact same software as a real TX16W.

That last sentence is worth elaborating on. Sonic Charge have not merely created a new virtual instrument with a vintage sound, neither is Cyclone an updated version of Typhoon. Cyclone features a full 68000 emulator that runs the exact same version of Typhoon that was released 14 years ago. This implies that using Cyclone will require a bit more effort than your average modern virtual instrument. But this can also be a very rewarding experience. Regard Cyclone as a time travel portal to an era from the past. The era of the monster dinosaur samplers.

Cycle-Lite

Cycle-Lite free software-synthesizer by Sample Fuel

Cycle-Lite is a free software synthesizer for HALion, developed by Sample Fuel. Available format(s): for .

Cycle-Lite is a sample based synth engine that houses 4 different sample layers with 24 different sample sources each. The engine cycles through each layer in order in tempo with the host/DAW. When the cycling is disabled, this instrument is capable to create thick and powerful 4 layer pads. The factory library includes over 35 professionally curate program presets.

This is a lite version of Sample Fuel’s full version instrument, Cycle-CRE8.

This is not a demo or timed-out version. Cycle-CRE8 is hosted in Steinberg’s HALion Sonic SE (free multi-timbral host).

Cycle Shifter

Cycle Shifter free other-utility by ndc Plugs

Cycle Shifter is a free audio and studio utility VST plugin developed by ndc Plugs. Compatible OS(s): Windows, macOS.

Cycle Shifter reads in a single cycle of input audio, then (at the end of the cycle) outputs it on top of the current input audio, repeating the process ad infinitum. It works best on long, sustained sounds like strings and pads, sounding like a strange kind of noisy/gentle distortion. You won’t hear much effect on drums because they generally have such a high frequency content.

Custom Reverb Free and Commercial

Custom Reverb Free and Commercial free reverb by Bitsonic

Custom Reverb Free and Commercial is a free reverb VST plugin developed by Bitsonic. Compatible OS(s): Windows.

Custom reverb was created so that the sound is as close to real life as possible, and users can choose from many different options:

  • Original: Changes the volume of the original sign.
  • Reflection: Changes the volume of the early reflection. This function is especially useful if it’s used to higher the sense of space.
  • Reverb: Changes the volume of the traditional reverb.
  • Decay: This function changes the reverb’s decay and fade time.
  • Low cut: This filter cuts the deep range’s volume to fit the user’s wishes. It’s recommended to use this function in most cases.
  • High cut: This filter cuts the high range’s volume. It’s not necessary to use it most of the time, but it’s recommended with longer decay values.
  • Width: Reverb can be changed into both stereo and mono.
  • Delay: This function delays the reverb compared to the original sign. If reflection delay function is on then the early reflection is delayed as well.
  • Gate button: When on, the reverb fades based on the gate’s settings. Useful for creating the pumping sound of drums.
  • Threshold: Belongs to the agate function. In dB this value starts the gate function.
  • Attack: A value in millseconds, it sets when the gate is supposed to lower the volume.
  • Release: Sets the the gate’s lowering time.
  • HS Filter: When it’s on, the reverb’s high range can be raised or lowered on the graphic interface.
  • SEQ button: When it’s on, using the gate sequencer the user lower or raise the volume of specific parts of the reverb without changing the original sign. Using this function the traditional reverb sound can be used as a special sound effect.
  • Sample rate: The user can lower the sound quality of the reverb if the pattern function is on, and therefore the sound created with the sequencer can be further changed.
  • Sequencer: The red leds are the sound heard in the timeline, the grey ones are the muted sounds. The top row is the left, the bottom row is the right side.
  • Mute: If the value is high, the grey leds completely turn off the sound of the reverb at the given moment. If the value is at minimum this can be avoided. This function help with setting the ratio of the original and the mixed sign.
  • Smooth: Changes the time of the gate created with the sequencer. If the time is short, the sound allowed by the red led will be short as well. On high value the gated sounds one after another will no longer be separate.
  • Swing: Gate function is originally created for a simple 4/4 rhythm, this function changes that.
  • Pitch: We can change the reverb of pitch between the sequencer leds.
  • If the content on the graphic interface starts to flicker, the volume is too high. It’s recommended to lower it.

Cumulus

Cumulus free software-synthesizer by Loomer

Cumulus is a free software synthesizer developed by Loomer. Available format(s): VST, Audio Unit, RTAS for Windows, macOS.

Cumulus is a granular sampler which radically transforms sample content by breaking it into tiny slithers of audio called grains and reorganizing them to form new sounds. Cumulus is capable of a wide ranges of timbres: from evolving atmospheric soundscapes; to organic physical textures.

Up to eight Scenes can be created; a Scene corresponding to a particular sample position and set of synthesis parameters. Scenes can be played in realtime via MIDI, or arranged internally using the built-in sequencer.

Cumulus is available free on the cover-mounted DVD of Computer Music magazine.
